Milk: The Original Protein Drink That’s Been Quietly Winning for Centuries

Milk keeps showing up with protein, calcium, vitamin D, and a pretty strong case for being one of the most useful foods in your fridge.

Milk does not usually get a standing ovation. It is not trendy. It does not come in a flashy can. It has never been called “elite fuel” by a guy on social media wearing sunglasses indoors.

And yet, milk keeps showing up with protein, calcium, vitamin D, and a pretty strong case for being one of the most useful foods in your fridge.

           So, why drink milk?

Because your body actually likes nutrients.

Milk provides protein, which helps support muscle mass. That matters at any age, but especially as we get older and want to stay strong, steady, and independent. It also provides calcium and vitamin D, which help support bone health. In other words, milk is out here doing important behind-the-scenes work with very little applause.

How much dairy do you need?

A simple goal is 3 servings per day. One serving can look like:

            1 cup of milk

1 cup of yogurt or cottage cheese

1 ounce of cheese, like one cheese stick or one slice

That does not mean you need to chug three glasses of milk a day like it is a 1990s commercial. It just means dairy foods can be part of a balanced day in easy, practical ways.

Let’s talk about the “milk has too much sugar” myth

Milk contains lactose, which is a natural sugar. That sugar shows up on the nutrition label under total sugar, but it is not the same thing as added sugar. That distinction matters.

For most people, the goal is to cut back on added sugars, not naturally occurring sugars in nutrient-rich foods like plain milk. So no, plain milk is not secretly a dessert pretending to be a beverage.

           Are plant-based milks better?

           That depends on your needs.

Alternative milks can be a great option for people with lactose intolerance or a dairy allergy. Many are fortified with calcium and vitamin D, which is helpful. But they are not all nutritionally the same. Some contain added sugars, and many have less protein than dairy milk. If protein matters to you, soy milk and pea protein milk are usually stronger choices.

The takeaway: read the label. Because two cartons sitting next to each other can look equally healthy while telling very different stories.

What’s the best milk to choose?

The best milk is the one that works for your body, your health needs, and your daily routine.

For some people, that is low-fat dairy milk. For others, it is fortified soy milk or pea protein milk. The point is not to win some imaginary milk debate. The point is to choose an option that helps you get the nutrients you need.

I love that many items at Walmart are healthy and affordable for my budget. Walmart has a very large selection of reliably low prices, and plenty of shortcuts such as pre-cut produce, heat-andeat meals, and the Great Value brand that keeps things budget-friendly without sacrificing quality. In addition, they carry many fresh fruits and vegetables that are affordable as well, such as cabbage, carrots, apples, bananas, strawberries and blueberries.

As we get older, our needs shift and so do our routines. Meals need to be nutritious, easy to prepare, and gentle on the budget. If you’re dealing with health issues such as arthritis, limited mobility, diabetes, or high blood pressure, a larger variety of healthy choices is helpful. Walmart makes that easier with fresh produce, affordable pantry staples, and a lot of senior-friendly conveniences such as frozen, heat-and-eat meals.

Walmart now has more variety of low-sodium, whole-grain, and “better choice” items than they have previously. With a little bit of planning, you can make simple, tasty meals that help support your long-term health without stretching the budget thin.

Everything can be tossed into one pot with water and simmered until the pasta softens. It’s budget-friendly, heart-healthy and easy to reheat. Trust me, the leftovers usually taste even better the next day.

It’s a balanced, nutritious meal with protein and fiber and you can swap in whatever vegetables are on sale that week. If chopping is tough, Walmart’s Marketside pre-cut vegetables make this almost effortless.

What’s the Best Diet?

But, what if I told you that “diet” doesn’t have to be negative? What if “diet” is neutral and could even be positive?

What do you think of when you hear the word “diet”?

For many, this four-letter word brings up feelings of angst, rigidity, and stress. It conjures memories of eating bland foods or spending lots of money on weight-loss books, foods, and clinics. It means no sugar, fat, salt, or fun. All for what? You may lose some weight, but you also lose time, money, and happiness in the process, then regain the weight or not meet your goals.

But, what if I told you that “diet” doesn’t have to be negative? What if “diet” is neutral and could even be positive?

The primary definition of diet is what you eat and drink regularly. These everyday choices could be helpful or harmful, depending on your goals. Ultimately, you choose how you fuel your body every day.

Some may eat most of their meals from restaurants while others cook most. Some are allergic to peanuts, while others have no dairy products. Some may have kidney disease, so their doctor and dietitian have recommended specific foods to keep them healthy. And some choose to try diets they see on the news or the internet.

Information about fad diets or diets promoted by the fitness industry, influencers, bloggers, or whoever is popular in the media is dizzying. Throughout the years, we’ve seen various diets come and go. In the 1960s, WeightWatchers was born, and the Grapefruit Diet and Slimfast came in the 1970s. Later, there was the Cabbage Soup diet, Jenny Craig, and low-fat, blood-type diets in the ’80s and ’90s. In the last 20 years, we’ve seen the Subway Diet, Atkins, juicing, South Beach, Raw Food, Paleo, and Keto diets. With all of these diets, are we any closer to determining the best diet?

Researchers have tried to answer this question by studying the diet habits of various people across the world, which have brought us the Mediterranean Diet, Anti-inflammatory Diet, Asian Diet, and French Diet.

So, which one is the best to follow? For starters, it’s best to be cautious of anyone giving diet advice and selling a product. The key to finding the best diet for you lies in three questions.

Can you follow this diet daily for the rest of your life?

Does it have a variety of foods?

Does it meet your health goals?

Can you follow this diet for the rest of your life?

If your diet is so restrictive that you cannot follow that way of eating for the rest of your life, it is time to reevaluate it. Your diet should incorporate foods you enjoy eating. Period. Yes, this means you should be comfortable eating what you may consider “treat” foods, like sweets, comfort foods, fried foods, and convenience foods, in addition to minimally processed foods.

Does your diet incorporate a variety of foods?

We can learn a lot from the research on diet. While we may not live on the Mediterranean Sea or in Asia, the common theme amongst all of the diets in research is that they all have a variety of whole, minimally processed foods. Why is variety essential? Each type of food has different nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat, antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals) that our body needs to function optimally. You may miss vital nutrients when cutting whole foods or food groups. In other words, you get the “bang for your buck” when you eat various foods.

Does it meet your health goals?

We all have personal and prescribed health goals related to weight, blood sugar, sports, and disease management or prevention. So, make sure to choose foods that align with these goals. That may mean you need to prioritize protein foods because you’re losing weight or need to gain muscle. You may need to be mindful of your starchy foods or carbohydrates because you have diabetes.

There is no one “best diet.” The best diet for you is one that you can enjoy, isn’t too restrictive, and makes you feel good and be your best self. Changing your eating lifestyle can be challenging, so seek help from a registered dietitian nutritionist. Call

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a serious condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Often referred to as “The Silent Killer," it typically has no symptoms, yet can lead to life-threatening complications such as heart attacks and strokes. For those aged 30 and older, keeping an eye on blood pressure levels is crucial for maintaining long-term health and preventing serious issues. But don’t worry—managing high blood pressure is achievable through simple lifestyle changes. Here’s what you need to know to take control and protect your health.

Blood pressure measures the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood through your body. When this pressure stays too high for too long, it can cause damage to your arteries and other vital organs, including your heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes.

A normal blood pressure reading is less than 120/80 mm Hg. If your readings are consistently higher, such as 130/80 mm Hg or more, you may have high blood pressure. However, many people with hypertension don’t experience any symptoms, which is why it’s so important to get regular checkups, even if you feel fine.

(Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is a great starting point. This eating plan emphasizes foods low in sodium and high in essential nutrients like potassium, magnesium, and calcium, which help control blood pressure. DASH encourages you to eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean meats while reducing salt, sugar, and saturated fats.

            Limit Your Salt Intake

Salt is one of the biggest contributors to high blood pressure. Most of our salt comes from processed foods like canned soups, snacks, and fast foods. Focus on eating “real” foods—whole, unprocessed foods you cook at home. Choosing a Neighborly meal, whether from Meals on Wheels or our Senior Café, will help ensure you’re getting real foods into your diet. When making meals, consider swapping out salt for flavorful citrus, herbs, and spices such as lemon, lime, garlic, basil, turmeric, or cinnamon. These spices can add a punch of flavor without raising your sodium intake.A simple trick to check your salt intake is to read nutrition labels. A food item is considered low in sodium if it contains 5% or less of the daily recommended value of sodium per serving and high if it contains 20% or more.

            Exercise Regularly

Exercise is a powerful tool in managing high blood pressure. Moving your body helps your heart become stronger and pump blood more efficiently, which can reduce pressure on your arteries. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. This can include chair exercise, walking, cycling, swimming, or even dancing, gardening, or cleaning—whatever keeps you active and engaged. You don’t need to run marathons to see the benefits; even small amounts of daily physical activity can make a big difference. If you’re just starting out, take it slow and gradually increase the intensity of your workouts.

            Maintain a Healthy Weight

Carrying extra weight can strain your heart, making it harder to pump blood efficiently and increasing your blood pressure. Losing even a small amount of weight—5 to 10% of your body weight—can significantly lower your blood pressure and improve your overall health. If weight loss is a goal, start by making small, sustainable changes to your diet and exercise routine. Every little bit helps, and consistency is vital.

            Manage Stress Effectively

Chronic stress can lead to elevated blood pressure. While avoiding stress completely is impossible, finding healthy ways to manage it can protect your heart. Activities like yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and even time in nature can help lower your stress levels and keep your blood pressure in check.Additionally, getting enough high-quality sleep is essential for stress management. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to help your body recover and function at its best.

            Quit Smoking and Limit Alcohol

Smoking causes your blood vessels to narrow, which increases your blood pressure and damages your arteries. If you smoke, quitting is one of the most important steps you can take for your heart health.Similarly, drinking too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure. Men should limit themselves to two drinks daily, and women should have no more than one. Cutting back on alcohol can lower your blood pressure and improve your overall health.

Know Your Numbers: Why Regular Blood Pressure Checks Are Important

Since high blood pressure usually has no symptoms, it’s important to monitor it regularly, either at your doctor’s office or at home with a reliable blood pressure monitor. This will help you keep track of your progress and alert you to any changes.

You should aim for regular checkups, especially if you are over 30 or have other risk factors, such as a family history of hypertension, being overweight, or having diabetes. The sooner you detect any issues, the sooner you can take action.

How Volunteering for a Nonprofit that Provides Social Engagement and Meal Sharing Might Move the Needle toward a Happier World

The 2025 World Happiness Report is out and the data, quite literally, has hit a nerve; namely the vagus nerve, in 142 countries around the globe.

The 2025 World Happiness Report is out and the data, quite literally, has hit a nerve; namely the vagus nerve, in 142 countries around the globe. You know, that nerve that connects the stomach to the brain? It plays an important role in regulating digestion, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, immune responses, mood, and speech. It’s part of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for the “rest and digest” functions. It helps your body calm down after stress and connects your brain to vital organs like your heart, lungs, and digestive tract, making it the longest cranial nerve.

So, what exactly does all this have to do with world happiness and volunteering?

In this year’s Happiness report, meal sharing appeared as an emerging metric of happiness. So much so that nearly 75% of the world’s countries are now tracking it. According to the report, “Sharing meals proves to be an exceptionally strong indicator of subjective wellbeing – on par with income and unemployment. Those who share more meals with others report significantly higher levels of life satisfaction and positive affect, and lower levels of negative affect. This is true across ages, genders, countries, cultures, and regions.”

But, we’re mentally starving. At least in America. The report goes on to say, “In the United States, using data from the American Time Use Survey, we find clear evidence that Americans are spending more and more time dining alone. In 2023, roughly 1 in 4 Americans reported eating all of their meals alone the previous day – an increase of 53% since 2003. Dining alone has become more prevalent for every age group, but especially for young people.” Depressing, for sure, but therein lies the opportunity! Each of us has the ability to engage with our families, neighbors, our friends, classmates, coworkers – even those we don’t know – who may be suffering. Just by sharing a bite!

One strategy for making a significant impact would be seeking out volunteer opportunities that bring people together to dine such as

            senior dining cafés

, just like Neighborly offers at eight locations throughout Pinellas County. Additionally, Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver hot, nutritious meals to homebound seniors, but more importantly, they spend a few minutes engaging with those they look in on, conducting informal wellness checks, and reporting concerns back to staff. These types of volunteerism specifically target some of our most vulnerable citizens. In other blogposts I’ve mentioned the myriad benefits of volunteering from increased longevity to greater functional ability and lower pain levels. Science shows us we benefit by helping others a mere two hours a week. What if one of those hours was spent delivering Meals on Wheels, or serving senior diners? Sounds like a good “pair and share” opportunity that quite literally could double the impact, and possibly move that needle toward a healthier, happier world.

Hurricane season begins in June, but the most severe storms typically occur in August. With that in mind, there is still time to prepare and ensure your safety. Having essential supplies like water and food is crucial before a storm hits to avoid shortages. If you are enrolled in Meals on Wheels Pinellas County or attend a Neighborly Senior Café, you can receive a 5-day hurricane meal box to help you stay nourished during an emergency.

Hurricanes can cause significant disruptions, including power outages, flooding, and blocked roads. These issues can make it difficult to access vital resources such as water, food, and medicine. Therefore, having enough supplies on hand is essential. Neighborly Care Network senior services can provide the necessary support to ensure you are well-prepared.

Planning ahead is crucial for staying safe and healthy during hurricane season. Here are key steps to take:

Ensure you have enough food, water, and medications.

Prepare your fridge and freezer for potential power outages.

Caring for seniors is a labor of love, but it’s also a role that rarely pays what it should. If you’re a caregiver—whether professionally trained or someone supporting a family member—you know that hours are long, breaks are short, and the emotional weight can be as exhausting as the physical toll. So what happens when the bills keep coming and the paycheck falls short? Many caregivers are turning to side gigs to fill the financial gaps, but juggling caregiving and extra work isn’t just about time—it’s about energy, mindset, and setting boundaries before burnout takes the wheel.

Before you start Googling “side gigs for caregivers,” step back and look at what you’re already great at. You’re probably an expert in organization, patience, and people skills—all of which translate beautifully to jobs like virtual assistant work, part-time tutoring, or even freelance customer support. These gigs aren’t just easy entry points—they play to the strengths you’ve already built through caregiving. You don’t need to reinvent yourself; you just need to

Let’s be real: your schedule isn’t exactly 9 to 5, and flexibility is non-negotiable. That’s why gig work platforms like TaskRabbit, Rover, or freelance marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr can be surprisingly accommodating. You can pick up small tasks during the senior’s nap, schedule virtual meetings around doctor’s appointments, or take on a project during the quiet of early mornings. The key is

for your side hustle, you’re doing more than just filing paperwork—you’re drawing a clean line between your personal life and your business responsibilities. That separation can help protect your assets in case something goes sideways, and it can make you look more professional to clients or platforms you’re working with. While state filing fees will vary based on your state, the peace of mind you get is often worth the cost. Online LLC formation services offer customized registration packages that also include EIN filing and registered agent services, making it easier to handle the red tape without adding more stress to your already full plate.

It’s easy to get swept into the hustle—especially when every dollar counts—but more isn’t always better. Apps that promise quick cash can become time sinks that pay pennies for hours of effort. Be cautious with any platform that requires you to spend money up front, take unpaid “assessments,” or do long onboarding processes with no guarantee of work. Think of your time as your most precious currency. Every hour you spend on a side gig

Here’s a truth that’s often ignored: not all side gigs are created equal, and some can actually restore your energy instead of depleting it. If you’re creative, maybe you start selling handmade crafts on Etsy. If you like to write, maybe you offer blog editing or ghostwriting services. And if you find joy in helping others beyond caregiving, maybe you offer companionship calls to lonely seniors in other states. The trick is finding

People love to help, but they won’t know how unless you tell them. Tap into your existing network—family, neighbors, people from support groups—and let them know you’re looking for part-time work that you can do remotely or on a flexible schedule. Someone may need help organizing their digital photos or managing their inbox. The opportunities won’t always look like “jobs,” but you’d be amazed at what people will pay for if you position it as a service they didn’t know they needed. And word of mouth? Still undefeated.

           Create Mental Separation Between Roles

One of the hardest things about being a caregiver with a side gig is the mental blurring between responsibilities. You might find yourself replying to client emails while administering meds or thinking about grocery lists while on a Zoom call. Don’t. Designate mental zones for caregiving and work, even if you’re doing both under the same roof. Maybe that means wearing headphones during your side gig or using a specific coffee mug when you’re in “work mode.” Small rituals help you stay present and keep your brain from melting into multitasking mush.

           Rest Is a Non-Negotiable Investment

You cannot hustle your way into sustainability. Every extra hour you work is a debit from your energy account, and if you don’t make deposits in the form of rest, you’ll go into burnout overdraft. Make rest a part of your “budget” the same way you schedule work. Build in moments where you unplug, even if it’s just to watch a dumb show, stare at the ceiling, or take a guilt-free nap. You’re not lazy—you’re

Let’s not sugarcoat it: being a caregiver is already a full-time job that comes with overtime, emotional tolls, and very little external praise. Wanting to supplement your income isn’t greedy—it’s survival, and it’s smart. But it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that more work equals more worth. The truth is, you’re already doing one of the most valuable jobs there is. The goal isn’t to add stress to your life—it’s to add options, confidence, and maybe even a little joy. Because you deserve that, too.

Volunteerism The Anti-Aging, World Peace-Generating Catalyst

Decades ago, retirees dominated the demographic most likely to volunteer as they wound down their professional lives, looking for ways to give back.

Decades ago, retirees dominated the demographic most likely to volunteer as they wound down their professional lives, looking for ways to give back. As a result, the research in the past focused solely on the benefits to older adult volunteers. But that’s changing, and in a number of surprising ways. Read on to learn more about the shifting demographics and some new, and enhanced, benefits of giving back for people of all ages.

If you are the parent of a child or teen struggling with health, behavioral, or anxiety issues, volunteering may be just what the doctor orders to get back on track. Why? Data published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows volunteering was associated with higher odds of parent-reported excellent or very good health in children and adolescents. Volunteering was also associated with higher odds of flourishing and lower odds of anxiety in adolescents.

    <sup>

           1.

    </sup>

Already in the UK, physicians and other healthcare providers are giving patients “social” prescriptions that encourage engaging activities, including volunteering. And here are two additional benefits for younger volunteers: 48% of young adults who volunteer earn As in school, and younger volunteers were motivated by the opportunity to socialize with friends while serving.

            Volunteering is fun, after all!

And the news just keeps getting better as we age. Take, for example, that data has long showed that volunteers consider themselves to be healthier, with lower blood pressure, and less likely to have a heart attack, than their non-volunteering peers. And we’ve also known that volunteering provides purpose and meaning which likely contribute to lower rates of depression and increased life satisfaction. But would you believe there’s now a correlation between volunteerism and anti-aging? Yes, data supports reduced aging among those who volunteer 1-49 hours per year and at 200+ hours of service per year. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that here at

, most volunteers serve about one hour per week – delivering Meals on Wheels, providing rides to seniors’ medical appointments, and other assignments – all well within the anti-aging benefit hours of service range! Among retired individuals, moderate volunteering was significantly associated with “decelerated epigenetic (the study of changes in genes that can be influenced by environmental factors, behaviors, or other external elements) age acceleration,” indicating greater benefits for retirees compared to working individuals.

We’re also learning that while we’re a society living much longer, Generation X, those who were born between 1965 and 1980, volunteer the most now (32.3% formally and 61.2% informally), with Millennials ranking #2 in formal volunteering rates.

Lastly, and likely one of the most compelling areas of research is that volunteering may increase trust within a community, especially when it brings together people from different backgrounds.

    <sup>

    </sup>

It is said to strengthen “social cohesion” which refers to the strength of relationships and a sense of unity or connectedness within a community. Volunteering, particularly when involving diverse groups, can strengthen social cohesion. In a divisive and strongly polarized world, imagine if volunteering could actually be a step toward healing, even world peace?

Kim, a 63-year-old retiree with a love for pickleball and eating potato chips, was diagnosed with diabetes in February 2024. The news hit her hard. With an A1c of 6.3%, she wasn’t just on the edge of diabetes—she was at a crossroads.

During their first meeting, Kim and her dietitian, Vivian, took a deep dive into her daily habits. Kim loved starting her mornings with juice to take her medications, sugary cereal and coffee. Kim often felt sluggish and famished by lunchtime. Processed snacks and convenience foods had become her go-to, especially on busy days.

Balancing Meals: Instead of cutting out foods she loved, Kim learned how to balance them. Including fiber rich grains such as whole wheat instead of white bread, lean protein-rich options like poultry and eggs with veggies, kept her full and satisfied.

Making Smart Swaps: Sugary cereal and juice in the morning were swapped for savory egg whites and avocado on whole grain toast, fruit and nuts. These foods kept her energy steady throughout the day. She also discovered the magic of spiralizing zucchini to add to her well-balanced casseroles, that helped stabilize her blood sugar.

Timing Matters: Eating at regular intervals became a game-changer. By fueling her body consistently every 3-4 hours, Kim avoided the blood sugar rollercoaster that left her feeling drained and irritable.

Moving More, Without the Gym: Kim didn’t need to overhaul her routine—just tweak it. By adding protein, healthy carbs and eliminating the refined cereal for breakfast, Kim could play pickleball for a longer time thus improving her fitness and blood sugar control.

Three months later, Kim reported to her Dietitian, that her A1c had dropped from 6.3% to 5.7%—back in the normal range. She had lost 8 pounds and felt more energetic. Kim’s doctor also had to lower her high blood pressure medication dose because it improved drastically. The best part of this journey was Kim could eat potato chips that were healthier than the standard highly processed chip because she learned what to look for on the nutrition label on all her food.

More and more people are living to 100 and beyond in America!

More and more people are living to 100 and beyond in America! In fact, the 85+ group is the fastest growing segment of the US population, followed by the 100+! So, what makes these individuals so unique?

For starters, these “superagers” – people who are age 95+ – seem to have both a positive outlook on life and demonstrate “resilience,” according to Sofiya Milman, director of Human Longevity Studies at the Institute for Aging Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. What is resilience? Optimism, hopefulness, the ability to flex when life changes, meaningful relationships, community connectivity, and movement.

There are approximately 101,000 centenarians living in the US according to the US Census Bureau. According Thomas Perls, founder and director of the New England Centenarian Study, 15% live independently or operate independently while living with someone, and about 20% of centenarians are free of physical or cognitive impairments. An additional 15% have no age-related illnesses such as arthritis or heart disease!

One aspect of resilience (community connections) is where I want to focus in this post. Time and time again, whether it’s longevity or happiness, the people who seem to live the longest and are happiest have meaningful relationships and they often maintain community connection through volunteering. As a byproduct of volunteering, many stay active, walking or moving, just like

           Meals on Wheels

volunteers. In fact, until just about a year ago, Neighborly even had a centenarian volunteer delivering meals to clients – sometimes 30 years younger than he!

Dilip Jeste, MD, distinguished professor of psychiatry and neurosciences and director of the Sam and Rose Stein Institute on Aging at University of California San Diego, says that being outside and having purpose are also linked to longevity. Why is being outside so helpful? For many reasons, Dr. Jeste says. While vitamin D production from sun exposure helps, he says, “When you’re outdoors, you’re being active,” he says, whether you’re gardening or walking to or from somewhere. “You’re also looking at trees and nature. You’re more apt to interact with other people than feeling isolated. All this can promote happy feelings.” That, in turn, promotes a positive outlook on life.

In Blue Zones around the world (where people frequently surpass 100 year old birthdays) often they are busy taking part in family or community events. Dr. Jeste believes that this feeling of purpose makes matters less stressful when challenges inevitably arise. “When they believe they need to be here for their family, children, land, or some other purpose, they’re less likely to give up,” he explains. And this is where the benefits of volunteering are so evident.

If you’re looking to live a long, healthy life, strive for movement, a healthy diet, 8 hours of sleep at night, and find your purpose, maybe volunteering for a cause you feel passionately about. Data shows you will, at the very least, be happier for doing so!

Just Exactly How Does Volunteering Work to Improve Health?

Professor Laura Kubzansky says the mechanisms of action linking volunteering and acts of kindness to health improvement isn’t really known, but it’s suspected to result from multiple processes.

In my last blog post I covered the recent NPR article, “When kindness becomes a habit, it improves our health.” The article details a wealth of benefits that can be experienced as a result of selfless service to others. But, just how does that happen?

Professor Laura Kubzansky at Harvard’s School of Public Health says the mechanisms of action linking volunteering and acts of kindness to health improvement isn’t really known, but it’s suspected to result from multiple processes. She cites the negative consequences of stress on the body, from blood pressure, high cholesterol and others, that increase risk of cardiovascular disease and poor health. She asserts volunteering may help to “buffer that stress response.”

“Volunteering or doing an act of kindness can distract you from some of the problems you might be having, so you might be a little bit less reactive yourself. It may help to give you more perspective on what your own problems are,” she said.

Other reasons why health seems to improve when one volunteers is that it gets people physically moving and less lonely. Social isolation, a big part of what our volunteers at Neighborly help to reduce, is a known risk factor for physical and mental health problems as we age, the article says.

While most of the research on volunteerism benefits is focused on middle and older adults, there are new studies coming out which demonstrate health improvements in younger generations. The cardiovascular improvements, among others, of high school students who volunteered with elementary school kids was the focus of one new study. You may recall in a previous blog post, I mentioned volunteering teens have better grades, too! That will certainly make their parents happy!

Volunteering doesn’t need to be formal, either, for one to experience benefits. Even helping a neighbor, commonly known as “informal volunteering”, has been shown to lower cardiovascular disease risk!

Trends in Volunteerism, 2025

Spring is just around the corner and it’s a perfect time to take a fresh look at what’s trending in the field of volunteerism and how

is responding. To understand how we got to today’s trends, it’s important to look to the past as it clearly impacted how we got to where we are today in a very significant way.

During the pandemic years, people in the US continued to demonstrate a willingness to serve, but in a much different, and lesser, capacity. Yes, rates declined and many nonprofits felt that pain. Many are still feeling those impacts. While online volunteering is not anything new, those eager to be of service while in the comfort of their homes took a stronghold and virtual volunteering became the trend du jour. And while this trend continues today, for us at Neighborly, virtual volunteering doesn’t get

to much needed medical appointments or pharmacies, nor can >meals be delivered to homebound seniors in this way.

We also learned that today’s volunteers require greater flexibility with the opportunities they choose to take on, and fewer people are able to make a weekly commitment of even just a couple of hours. This is why virtual appeals to them – they can do it on their time and their schedule. They.Are.Busy! Some additional trends include increased efforts to be more inclusive, and a rise in social/corporate volunteerism. Some companies have discovered that in today’s job market, applicants look for companies that provide opportunities to give back, and employers see volunteerism as a retention tactic. Skills-based volunteering (think business acumen for board leadership roles or marketing expertise for social media posts) is also trending.

So, with what we know, how is Neighborly pivoting?

The aforementioned trends create some unique obstacles, yet there are opportunities there as well. And while there are no true virtual volunteering opportunities at Neighborly, the tactic we’re taking is to explore a virtual volunteer orientation option. Historically we have only offered in-person orientations in a central part of the county. The reason for the delay in transitioning to this approach is due to funder requirements – virtual orientations make meeting those requirements difficult. Instead of looking at the barriers, we asked, “How could we work within those parameters, but still offer a virtual option?” Technology would be our best friend in this effort: from meeting platforms, sharing screens, providing documents that could be electronically signed, to a way to automatically ping those who had not followed through. While we can’t change the way service is performed (in-person), we can make it easier to volunteer. Once a volunteer has completed orientation, they serve in their own community.

Recruitment has also veered sharply away from traditional methods, and more and more volunteers are engaged as a result of compelling social media content. Gone are the days of running ads in newspapers and rarely do we see a speaking engagement produce new volunteers. This is good news because social media allows for a much more targeted approach: reach the right people at the right time at the right place.

Reaching diverse audiences as prospective volunteers was explored as well. Neighborly already enjoys a diverse volunteer base but we knew we had the potential to reach even more people. From sending messaging to neighborhood newspapers, to posting flyers at community centers and churches in those communities, these old school methods proved to reach some people “where they’re at.”

To appeal to those focused on social responsibility service,

program has an adopt-a-route program where we work with employers or churches who refer employees and members to us. For Meals on Wheels delivery, members or employees rotate through to ensure the route is covered each week. In this way, the responsibility is shared among a larger pool of people. It’s a win-win-win as seniors get the food they need, employees get the reward of impactful service, and church members fulfill their spiritual calling to feed the hungry.

Keeping pace with trends in volunteerism is paramount as things continue to change quickly. Keeping an eye on nascent approaches and looking for ways to remain flexible and responsive are key.

            Martin Luther King, Jr. said,

“Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

It turns out, volunteering has never been easier! In fact, “volunteer opportunities near me” is the most frequently typed search phrase prospective volunteers drop into their Google search bar today. In this post, I’ll provide information on how to find a rewarding assignment and how to overcome challenges to serving.

First, let’s cover motivation. Those who volunteer generally are motivated by making an impact. And for most it’s time-sensitive; the more timely the impact, the better. To find the right opportunity requires some introspection. Ask yourself, “What matters to me? How much time do I have, and is there a volunteer opportunity near me that I can reasonably commit to and for how long?” When you take an inventory of your values and the issues that matter to you, you’re one step closer to the volunteer opportunity that sets you and the nonprofit up for a win-win. AARP offers a simple self assessment that can put you on track.

           .

Beyond making an impact, flexibility is also an important consideration for today’s volunteers. Some older adults are still in the workforce and younger workers are obligated most of the work week. I have some good news, though! Organizations, like ours, offer flexible schedules, the chance to rotate the day of the week, or the freedom to pause service while snowbirding or on vacation. Several also offer virtual opportunities. Many of today’s employers, too, support their workers who make a regular investment in community service, and recent data show many workers will stay in a position when their employer encourages their volunteer service.

After 35 years of managing volunteer programs for a variety of organizations, there’s one volunteer assignment I’ve witnessed that attracts and retains volunteers unlike any other. One that, for decades, engages thousands of people of all ages and walks of life with a powerful purpose and continued meaning. What could possibly resonate so deeply with so many people that they continue their commitment to a cause for so long? Those who deliver Meals on Wheels. If you want to know your one to two hours of service a week is making a demonstrable difference, look no further. And the data proves this impact. Neighborly Meals on Wheels clients are surveyed semi-annually, and time and time again, what matters most to these seniors is their connection with their beloved volunteers. The food is just a bonus! I have also found that equally rewarding is medical transportation volunteering where individuals ensure seniors get to or from their medical appointments. In fact, those who volunteer for Meals on Wheels make up a majority of our medical transportation volunteers!

But what you might not know is that the many benefits volunteers provide such as companionship, food delivery, and other assistance, have a beneficial impact on the volunteer as well.

St. Petersburg has stepped up to address the critical issue of food insecurity among seniors by approving a significant funding increase for the Meals on Wheels program. In light of soaring food and fuel costs, the program faced mounting pressure, with a waitlist exceeding 800 seniors, over 200 residing in St. Petersburg itself.

Susan McIntyre, the Meals on Wheels program’s development director, shed light on the challenges posed by inflation. The rising costs threatened not only the program’s ability to serve its existing clients but also its long-term sustainability.

Recognizing the urgent need to ensure access to nutritious meals for seniors, the St. Pete City Council approved a 50% funding increase, translating to an additional $75,000. This crucial step forward signifies the council’s commitment to supporting the well-being of the city’s senior population.

McIntyre expressed her appreciation for the council’s responsiveness to the program’s growing needs. The additional funding will provide much-needed relief, allowing Meals on Wheels to alleviate the financial pressures and work towards reducing the waitlist backlog.
